URGENT: Submit a Comment on Wisconsin’s 2021 Wolf Hunt by TODAY and Register to Speak Remotely for the August 11th Meeting

Friends, we are asking if you would provide a public comment on Wisconsin’s fall 2021 wolf hunt. This action is urgent.

This week, the Department of Natural Resources published a recommendation for a quota of 130 wolves during the  November 2021 wolf hunt. However, given past experience, it is likely that the Natural Resources Board will reject that recommendation, and establish a much larger quota. Given the experience from February 2021, it is also very likely that hunters will substantially exceed any quota before the hunt is shut down. 

We are hoping that you will bring your best in everything we have learned over these Fireside Chats and send comments on the proposed quota and the 2021 fall hunt by August 3. You should send your comments to Laurie Ross at Laurie.Ross@wisconsin.gov and copy Randy Johnson at randy.johnson@wisconsin.gov. You can also submit your comments through this link, but we are asking that you also email them to Laurie Ross just to make sure that they have been received.

It is also vitally important that you register to testify remotely at the August 11th Wisconsin Natural Resources Board meeting to hold Dr. Prehn accountable and let the public and media hear your story about why wolves should be protected. We encourage you to voice your opinion on the potential effects the fall 2021 wolf hunt, particularly in light of the impact of the February 2021 hunt. Please detail any qualifications for the record and use that expertise, but you certainly do not have to be an expert to comment on any aspect off the 2021 wolf hunt, including, but not limited to:

  • Effects on wolves and/or the health of the WI wolf population 
  • Impacts on any other species, including domestic animals and people 
  • Consequences for the ecosystem as a whole
  • Science used to evaluate the wolf population and set the quota
  • The data on presumed hunter success rates, reporting of kills, and analysis of wolves killed (how many were pregnant, etc.), and fully quantifying the damage done to the wolf population
  • The methods used for the hunt (e.g. hunting with hounds, trapping, baiting and night hunting)
  • Any other ethical, scientific, or legal aspect of the hunt or the quota.

  1. Please STOP and desist the killing of WOLVES. STOP. This action is NOT necessary! Wolves Are NOT the problem, man is. STOP Please. Look to the greedy rich Ranchers. Your answer is THERE.

    1. Gray Wolves were delisted earlier this year, with a quoted population of 6,000. Usfws is leading government officials to believe the population is thriving. Not true any longer. Montana is killing 85% of Gray Wolves. Idaho 90%. Wisconsin has killed hundreds through their hunt. Oregon and Washington State culling wolves. Wyoming reports wolf numbers are flat, but issued 47 tags for a fall wolf hunt this year. Shows the delisting to state and tribal management is doing nothing, but destroying our wolves. Tons of funding has been spent on Gray Wolf population recovery. Many advocates and scientific experts have worked tirelessly for this cause. Now, it is being destroyed. No wolf hunts. Ban trapping and snares. Killing wolves now shows our taxpayers money has been misused. All the states listed above need to lose federal and state funding. Force them to pay back taxpayers money spent on Gray Wolf population recovery. The Gray Wolves need to be relisted under the ESA across the lower 48. No exceptions.

    3. STOP killing the wolves!!! This is senseless and well below our standards. I vehemently protest allowing this to be “acceptable”. Nature has to have balance and THEY perform this task quite well. You have to embrace what this species does for us, for deer, for any ill species. They are nature’s way to remedy many of these issues.

  3. Wisconsin DNR. Sad when human self centered interests take precedence over the survival of a species. Come up with a program where there is conservation of wolves. Not extinction. Ranchers and hunters need to practice conservation. Stop with the self interests. I am a hunter. Hunting is conservation. Not extinction.

    1. The senseless slaughter if innocent wolves HAS to stop. These “hunts” are inhumane and unnecessary. Haven’t humans screwed up this beautiful planet enough. Let’s give our native wildlife a fighting chance. Their numbers are far too small to justify these ridiculous and barbaric hunts.

    2. Minnesota, no wolf hunt this year. Michigan, no wolf hunt this year. Wisconsin, no matter how you phrase it, pushing for two wolf hunts this year. You have no idea how many wolves you have, nor the effect last February’s hunt, during the middle of the breeding season had upon your wolf population. Deer are eating up your northern forest, yet you’re pushing for more wolves to die. Killing wolves in the northern forest will have little to no impact where wolf depredations may cause concern.How about a Nobel approach and leave the wolves alone.

    3. I submitted my request to speak and have my speech ready. I have also submitted my written testimony to Laurie Ross. I am tired but ready to keep up the fight for our wolves and all wildlife.

  7. Stop the killing of innocent wolfs!!

    God created these beautiful animals

    They were created for a reason

    Stop the ranchers and hunters (who kill for fun—WHICH IS SICK) to stop
    killing and slaughter wolfs!!

    Ranchers kill their animals,
    Why Do they want to kill wolves too??
    Don’t they do enough killing of animals??

  11. Hunting wolves disrupts their society and destabilizes their packs and trophy hunting is morally wrong. I am embarrassed that these hunts go on in my home state. Wisconsin is better than this!

  13. Wolf hunt? Why? Surely it’s not still being debated how important wolves are for a truly balanced and healthy environment with very few predators left (except us). Wolves were reintroduced successfully in places like Yellowstone where they had been absent for decades – to great benefit. Please protect this vulnerable species.

  15. Wolves are a keystone species vital to a healthy ecology. They manage their own population quite well, without human interference. There is so much misinformation about wolves and how dangerous they are, they are not dangerous to humans. There should be no hunt, it is cruel and wrong on many levels. The slaughter is based on lies and greed!

  16. I’ve always had much respect for the Wisconsin DNR, they have a difficult job and work hard to do their best, but some of my respect has been lost especially for the people involved with the February 2021 hunt. To over shoot a quota as they did was negligence.

  17. Wolves need your protection from poachers and trophy hunters. You care more for them than the farmers who see their herd at greater risk following a hunt than any other time during the year. You care more for the hound hunters than the private land owners who have lost family pets to the dogs who are trained to fight and kill. Wolves have done a great job at not over populating and helping keep other prey numbers down, such as deer.
    Stop checking your wallet and bank accounts for tips from out of state “hunters” and fight for the animals, fight for the citizens of this state and listen to the subject matter experts who have been studying these majestic creatures longer than you’ve been alive.

  18. Great comments by all. I hope that all of you submitted them to Laurie Ross at the DNR (Laurie.Ross@wisconsin.gov) to present to the NRB (Natural Resources Board) before 11:00am this morning. All your voices are very important to stop another slaughter of OUR wolves and especially need to be heard. Thank you.
