A Letter from your Executive Director, Melissa Smith
Dear Advocates,
We have already accomplished so much in 2022, sending in resolutions to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, meeting with state and federal lawmakers and staying informed. We have protected most of the wolves in our country and helped wildlife in peril just not in our backyards but nationally as well.
This is the moment to change it all — the business climate, the political climate, and how we take action for wildlife. Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our wildlife for generations to come. We are the majority and we we will keep up endless pressure.
Because a green future is a prosperous future for wildlife
We need to act boldly; using respect, reciprocity and restorative energy. It’s going to take all of us, all in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for wildlife conservation. But we need leaders and you have all proven you are leaders.
And while there is still time to restore nature and bring back healthy populations of wolves and wildlife, time is short. Your contributions whether joining our Fireside Chats, donating needed funds, showing up, and even having one-on-one conversations to get other folks engaged all ensure we still can do this.
This year, our Earth Day theme is “Invest In Our Planet. What Will We Do?” Respect. Reciprocity. Restoration. And that includes restoring ourselves for the next battles ahead.
On Saturday, April 23rd we will be holding an in-person event to build our current relationships and hopefully foster new ones. To share a common vision of wildlife for all. And giving thanks back to the wildlife we so desperately need and care about.
Join us at Lewiston, home of the famous Bog Pack, for some great storytelling, wildlife watching, invasive plant removal and setting out trail cameras to monitor and experience images of wildlife together afterward, while leaving them to exist without the interference of human beings.
For Earth Day 2022, together, for everyone, everything, every day…And I can’t wait to finally see you in person after all this time…please join us!
Victories for Wildlife
We recently learned that Chairman Grijalva will not be granting the request for a hearing on Toxic Tom Tiffany’s “Managing Our Predators Act” (you can read about it here). They feel that the originally planned oversight hearing would ultimately be worse for the wolf and the Endangered Species Act.
There are three bills to delist wolves currently in play:
- HR 7197 Sponsored by Rep. Andy Biggs (all cosponsors are Republican)
- HR 286 Tom Tiffany Bill (all cosponsors are Republican)
- S3738 Sponsored by Senator Ron Johnson, cosponsored by Tammy Baldwin
We are keeping a close eye on each of these bills for you and are currently working to schedule meetings with your U.S. Congressional Representatives.
These meetings with Representatives will be held online via Zoom. If you haven’t yet, please be sure to RSVP below and your meeting link will be emailed to you ahead of time. We will also be scheduling meetings with Senator Baldwin and Senator Johnson.
Tuesday, April 26th, 2022 at 12:15 PM we will be meeting with Congressman Glenn Grothman via Zoom. If you are in his district, please let us know and register below.
Toxic Tom Tiffany is about as anti-wolf as they come. He also has a horrible record on environmental issues. Unfortunately, he has refused to meet with our advocates and his own constituents who disagree with his anti-wildlife stances.
Howls of thanks to Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers for vetoing a bill that would have dramatically expanded canned hunting by allowing species such as Mountain Goats, Impala and Wildebeest to be stocked and shot within fenced areas for guaranteed trophies. We believe canned hunting for wild and exotic species has absolutely NO place in the state of Wisconsin and we want to thank Governor Evers for listening to the wildlife conservation community and vetoing this egregious legislation!

Growing up in rural Douglas County taught me at an early age to appreciate the animals around. As an only child, I spent a LOT of time in the woods. Since that time, I have worked for an organization that provides services for physically and/or developmentally disabled individuals. I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Herbalists without Borders, a local abuse shelter, and a dog walker/cat cuddler at a couple local animal shelters.
Wolves have been my main focus in my animal advocacy journey, but I love all animals. I am passionate about ending hounding and trapping. I love my time with Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf and Wildlife because I feel that this group really is passionate about creating change for the better for the animals, and everyone I have met so far has worked so hard to help create that change. ~Cori Martin
