ISLE ROYALE UPDATE - A gray wolf that was translocated from Minnesota to @isleroyalenps last fall has wandered back to the mainland, trekking more than 15 miles across the frozen surface of Lake Superior to reach her home turf. GPS data was used to confirm the wolf had left Isle Royale on January 31 and was near the border between northeastern Minnesota and Ontario. The @nationalparkservice hopes to move 20 - 30 wolves to Isle Royale over several years, but the project has hit some early snags. One wolf captured for movement to the park died in captivity. Another perished a month after it arrived. Plans to transfer a new group from Canada have been delayed, first by the government shutdown and then by rough weather. Still, park superintendent Phyllis Green said such setbacks weren't unexpected and wouldn't thwart the operation. On Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands are often foggy and cold—but that doesn’t make them devoid of life. In fact, carnivores are thriving there, according to new research. The study, released last month in the journal Community Ecology, relies on more than 200,000 photos taken by motion-activated cameras over three years. These 160 hidden cameras snapped some shots of 10 of the state’s 12 land carnivores: black bears, bobcats, coyotes, gray foxes, gray wolves, red foxes, weasels, American martens, and fishers. As the images reveal, the community is doing pretty damn well, despite the harsh conditions required to reach these remote islands. Scientists believe many of these animals swim between islands or use ice bridges during winter months. Climate change will make those ice bridges less of a possibility in the future, which could spell trouble for the species that depend on the islands’ resources. On the bright side, the study showed how resilient these carnivores can be. If they’ll traverse the rough waters of Lake Superior to reach these isolated islands, who knows what else they are capable of? #greatlakeswolves [photo by @jimbrandenburg ]

:: ISLE ROYALE UPDATE :: Tracking collars on the new @isleroyalenps wolves show there is one area they will not go. According to park staff, although the new wolves have been exploring everywhere - they are not venturing too deep into the island's south quadrant which is the assumed general territory of the resident wolves, a male and female who are so inter-related they are not likely to have viable offspring. The two older wolves have been a lone pair for years, and are the last remnants of the island's formerly robust pack system. In addition to tracking movements, the park service is also monitoring if the wolves come within 250 meters of each other. Living with predators is not without risk, but science and experience has shown that the risk of living with wolves is very small. USDA statistics reflect my own experience. Cattle are 20 times more likely to die from pneumonia than be killed by any predator. Dogs in wolf country are 10 times more likely to be killed by a bear and 1,000 times more likely to die of cancer than a wolf attack. States with wolves see wildlife populations and forest habitats improve with the more balanced ecosystem. Millions of people and tens of millions of livestock currently coexist with wolves. Wolves aren’t cold-blooded killers, they are simply necessary predators. - BREAKING NEWS - This morning the US House of Representatives passed HR 6784, the “Manage Our Wolves Act” despite vehement public opposition from constituents, scientists, hunters and business owners. The bill calls for the removal of federal protections for all wolves in the lower 48 with language that blocks any opportunity for judicial review. Stay tuned as we continue to follow developments on capitol hill... #KeepWolvesListed

Some positive news! The @centerforbiodiv sued the @USFWS yesterday, for violating the Endangered Species Act by never providing a comprehensive recovery plan for gray wolves nationwide, which is required by the law. The lawsuit argues that wolves must remain federally protected until the USFWS implements a national recovery plan. But the agency is planning to remove endangered species protection from nearly all gray wolves in the lower 48 states through a proposed rule expected next month. That would make wolves vulnerable to trophy hunting and trapping, halting their progress toward recovery. The lawsuit argues that the USFWS can’t remove wolf protections until the agency has recovered wolves nationwide.
